One of the most exciting parts of the People’s Media Collection pilot is that we are working at two very different kinds of libraries. West Oak Lane is a cozy library, with a small staff serving locals to the West Oak Lane neighborhood. Northeast Regional is a hub for the library branches of the Northeast, eight in total, serving a sprawling section of Philadelphia. Collaborating with these two different libraries allows all of the cooperating organizations (Philly Community Access Media, The Free Library of Philadelphia, and the Knight Foundation) to assess what works in one kind of environment and what is successful in the other. At this point there are a lot of overlaps, strong relationships with library staff who can point you to patrons they know would be interested in storytelling and video production, and a kind, open demeanor that makes programming welcoming and accessible to patrons.
